How Monolingual Educators Can Support Emergent Multilingual Learners
Emergent Multilingual Learners (EMLs) are students who continue developing their home language while learning an additional language.
This course explores effective, inclusive ways all educators—not only language specialists—can support multilingual learners in today’s classrooms.
Participants will examine mindsets and research-based strategies that strengthen relationships with EMLs, support newcomers, and honor students’ linguistic and cultural assets.
The course also highlights practical approaches for leveraging a student’s first language—even when educators do not speak that language themselves.
Key topics include instructional scaffolds that promote academic growth, the use of WIDA Can Do Descriptors, and strategies for building meaningful partnerships with parents and caregivers of multilingual learners.
Educators will also explore lesson-planning practices that support reading, writing, speaking, and listening development across content areas.
